More Blood Than Love
Words by Sean Moeller, Illustration by Johnnie Cluney, Recording engineered by Matt Oliver, Mastered by Sam Patlove
When someone writes their own theme, you should take them at their word. You should accept it all as they present it, for someone attempting to sum themselves up for easier consumption is convenient and it takes away some of the guesswork - the crap that we never want to do, what with our busy lives and all.
Austin's Shapes Have Fangs explain that they think about blood and rarely think about love. It can't be so easy to do, but they're telling us what they're telling us for a reason. The band's theme song transitions right into "Only Blood," a grimy garage rock song that has dirty fingernails and a laborer's lament going for it. It's got some of that primal rage that comes from barely scraping by and taking a lot of shit from other people who don't deserve respect. It's a song that billows with fumes and with the fantastical thought that someone's going to get shot tonight, right here in this bar, on this side of town. The song weaves through alleys and other tiny roads that are used for discretionary dealings.
These are sentiments that come out of the shittiest taverns, filled with men who are running away from or avoiding any number of things and people. They are sentiments that have fevers left in them. There is more to them than meets the eye. They rip and they tear. They actually make me want to snip the legs off of all of my blue jeans, making them into pairs of shorts that only occasionally look acceptable. They make me want to roll a pack of cigarettes into the sleeve of my shirt, though I'd do nothing with them once they were there. They make me want to fly down one of those non-descript back roads in a car that's not really meant for it and try to open it up as much as possible, just to see what that baby could do. It makes me want to crash the car, just to see what it feels like to know that I'm not in control.
