All The Fire For Health

Words by Sean Moeller, Illustration by Johnnie Cluney, Recording engineered by Mike Gentry

We should begin by just saying, "Watch out for Young Buffalo." It's not often that on the first listen of such a young band that the phrase "a force of nature" zooms to the tip of your tongue, but that's what happens when we listen to this Oxford, Mississippi band's early output. It's all heady and tuneful, feral and precise. It banks on the very real understanding that our hearts, minds, ears and legs are all connected by the same veins, the same muscles, tied together with our own fleshy, gristly and bloody wiring. They act as one, in congress and Young Buffalo exploits that, making every moment in every one of its songs feel like a bursting, like the top popping off of a fire hydrant in the middle of July: there's energy getting displaced, busting through the air, there's surprise, there's refreshment and a cooling respite and there's all kinds of joyfulness as we rush to splash under the gushing waterfall. The trio mounts harmonies upon harmonies and we feel as if we're no longer in control of our taping feet and our bobbing heads, our swiveling midsections and we've come to really, really, really like how we feel when we've gotten out of control. We want to keep feeling uncontrollable. "Catapilah," the band's debut single from its forthcoming first record on Fat Possum Records, is a song that feels like a graceful streaking, as if those doing such were sparklers or fireworks in slow motion, caking the black night with a sweep of bright color, punctuating the stillness with a brilliant abstraction. It's a song that lies somewhere between the Arctic Monkeys, Dodos and something coming out of one of Levon Helm's Midnight Rambles. It's a furnace and it runs the course of a full circuit, swinging us on a live rocket. They sing, "You've got your health, I've got myself," but there's no doubt that these guys got the better end of the deal. They've got something better than health and there aren't many things better than that. You're always hearing people talk about how, at least they have their health, but it's all a crock. It's better to have fire inside. Fuck health.

  1. These guys are force to be reckoned with. I listened to this session and I thought to myself, where did these guys come from. Then i found out how young, Young Buffalo actually is. These guys are one of the best session that Daytrotter has hosted in a while. ltesoriero Friday, February 18, 2011 7:34 pm

  4. I grew up with these guys and know them well. If I were not to know them personally and were to discover their music on Daytrotter, I would still be a humongous fan and recommend their genius songs to everyone I were to come in contact with. The guys are exceptional musicians who have spent years individually honing their craft into something wonderful and mind-blowingly exceptional. When people ask me what they sound like I simply say "They sound like Young Buffalo". They are their own animal. An animal that makes you dance, reflect, and simply have a better day after listening. Live or on record, my friends a bring an overwhelmingly great quality in their music and their performance. In a state where cookie cutter crap country music is usually a standard, Young Buffalo brings a breath of fresh air to Mississippi. Great job Alex, Ben, and Jim! I am proud to call you my friends. You represent Oxford well. Also, thank you Daytrotter for showing everyone else the greatness that is Young Buffalo.

F.Y.I. "Catapilah" is a good song to make out to. Well, its a good song for any occasion. I would want that song played at my funeral.

  7. I agree with kickinwing. What a great place to find new emerging artists that may not be on many people's radar. I have just recently found Daytrotter and in addition to Young Buffalo, I have been turned on to great acts that I have never heard of like J Roddy Walston and the Business, April Smith and the Great Picture Show, The Submarines, and Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers. I have also snapped up Daytrotter Sessions of groups I am already familiar with like Blitzen Trapper, Elizabeth and the Catapult, MGMT, The Dodos, and Frightened Rabbit. I will definitely be stopping by every day. Anonymous Monday, January 31, 2011 5:49 am
