I’ve found the key to solving all the world’s problems. Violence, racism, crime, pillaging, even so much as dirty looks will all be a thing of the past. No more will you have to turn on the news and witness the downfalls of civilized society. The answer is quite simple, actually. All we have to do is somehow extract and bottle the essence of the five members of Tilly and the Wall into an elixir and ship to the more than six billion people inhabiting this earth. We should start by studying why their first two albums Wild Like Children and Bottoms of Barrels are so contagiously uplifting, but then anyone who has seen this super tight-knit band together on stage should know their comradery is truly one-of-a-kind. We’ve witnessed it first-hand here with two dynamite sessions, and with the band’s third album O forthcoming, we have to say whatever formula they’re using isn’t wearing off. When they visited us last Jamie Pressnall—she of the tap-dancing percussion section of the band—told us to expect the next album to have more of a punk and lo-fi sound. She didn’t lie. While the majority of the songs on O are still coming of age anthems, there is definitely more crunch (and cursing) unprecedented in their first two efforts. Few saw “Pot Kettle Black” and its pavement pounding percussion and chunky riff coming, but could anyone deny they would be just as comfortable, whatever the style? Tilly’s music has always been a product of the five members leaning on each other like crutches, and the result has been making the world a better place to live one song at a time.
