tell your friends...
Joe Haege of 31 Knots describes his South By Southwest:
SXSW was a mixed bag for us. Jay Winebrenner loved it, whereas Pellicci and I got a little tired of it by the end. Our Polyvinyl showcase was definitely one of the highlights for us. Oh, and the two Green Milk From the Planet Orange shows I saw. Those guys are amazing. We were fortunate enough to have an old high school friend in Austin, so we had a little bit of the local take on the town, which was nice. The main anecdote I think we had down there was right when I was coming out from backstage, preparing to play at the Polyvinyl showcase. I had changed into one of my outfits that I have been adorning on this tour. This one consisted of a Marching band coat, bright white pants and white shoes. Oh and a whistle. I think that was the part that had the security up on my shit ASAP. As soon as I walked through the crowd and blew the whistle he was grabbing my arm. Since I was kind of already in character, I weaseled my arm out of his grasp and stared at him like he was fucking with me. Needless to say, there was part of me that felt bad for this guy that had probably, after only a day and a half, already had his share of SXSW shenanigans. However, the look in his eyes when I backed away from him and made my way to the stage was priceless.
Drummer Jay Pellicci does the same:
My personal SXSW highlight was watching the Dirty Projectors play. I think it might be some of the best music I’ve seen or heard in years and years. It was really fun walking around and watching the spectacle that is SXSW, but as far as playing shows, to me it was very clear that most of the organizers were not doing it for the sake of music. It kind of felt like getting run through an assembly line of sorts. It was nice seeing a bunch of people that we haven’t seen in a while, though. Oh, and hoek’s death metal (maybe it was black metal…). Pizza was also great.

Second song
Corpse and Carcass (31 Knots) [4.47MB] [1616 downloads]
– original version appears on The Curse of the Longest Day
This one came out on our first Polyvinyl release. It’s become a staple of our live show and is always fun to play. Though it sounds like a solo in the middle of the song, I just consider it another “riff.”
Third song
The Days And Nights Of Lust And Presumption (31 Knots) [2.74MB] [1582 downloads]
– original version appears on The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere
Wow. I don’t know how this one turned out. I hope good. I know it was the last one we did that night and my voice, after having already played a show that day, was really shot. So, I tried to sing it in a different register. Hell, if anything it’s one of a kind!
Fourth song
Sanctify (31 Knots) [3.05MB] [1627 downloads]
– original version appears on The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere
I love playing this one live. It’s probably one of the few songs we have that keeps a heavy-handed groove the entire way. It definitely represents something I hope to create more of in the band. This song is one of my personal points of pride when thinking about songs from Days.
