tell your friends...
The Midwestern winter had yet to unclench its teeth from our calves by this day in late February, when The Spinto Band were making their way over the white and resting land. The night before, no one here in town left their houses if they didn’t absolutely have to as a nasty ice storm blew through a wide scrape of the area north, south, east and west. We were pessimistic that the session would be able to happen with the road conditions being what they were, but we worried too much for no reason as The Spinto Band soldiered through like the iron-willed lads that they are. We did, with our feet dragging, make the decision to only do one session that afternoon instead of two. We were forced to call Dios Malos – also on tour with the Spintos and The Changes; a tour that started two nights prior in Madison, Wisc. – and break the bad news as we didn’t want anyone to have to rush and spin into one of the Land of Lincoln’s many ditches. We made it up to the Dios folks a few weeks later and turned everything right with our karmas. The Spinto Band wasted no time in laying to tape the first of three never-before-recorded songs, setting a new Daytrotter record for quickest set-up for any band over four members. Then they asked us if they could use the word “bitch” in a song and we told them, “Absolutely, of course you may.” The version of “Oh Mandy,” the ubiquitous Spinto Band track – if one should need to be signaled as such – is more than your money’s worth, with a snappy hip-hop bridge that can be heard no where else. At the conclusion of the song, we tried to scare some details about the new Teeth record from Nick Krill, who recorded it and then the snows started falling again outside for the band’s drive to Iowa City. – Sean Moeller
First song
Ain't That The Truth (Spinto Band) [2.74MB] [3039 downloads]
– unreleased
Nick Krill wrote this song and sings it from the deepest part of his innards. It’s one of the newer songs the band has been trying to play, and this Daytrotter version might be the first time it has been recorded.
Nick: Sometimes realizations just dawn on you. Ain’t this always the case?
Second song
Oh Mandy (Spinto Band) [2.98MB] [3361 downloads]
Third song
Needlepoint (Spinto Band) [2.90MB] [2831 downloads]
– unreleased
This song used to be called “The Capo Song,” but that would have never lasted. It is another new one that people may be hearing for the first time on this Daytrotter session. Tom Hughes wrote it and sings from his hip.
Thomas: This number demonstrates our fondness of ostinato. The lyrics are loosely based on a conflict between feminine craft and feminist thought…But there’s also a lot of patchwork thrown in.
Fourth song
Cat's Pajamas (Spinto Band) [2.91MB] [2940 downloads]
– unreleased
We started playing this song about a year ago. It has evolved and taken new shapes a few dozen times, but the basic structure remains unphased. It has been tempered so many times, by now it is pretty much the T-1000 from Terminator 2 (which Sam Hughes has never seen.)
Nick: In my book, it is the highest compliment one can give. However, it is terribly easy to become lax in one’s usage of the phrase. Save it up people.
