It comes as a great thrill for all of us here at Daytrotter to announce our association with the Asthmatic Kitty Records South By Southwest Festival showcase as well as a rare and exclusive sneak peekage into a Castanets Daytrotter session that is likely slated for a May release on the site. Raymond Raposa, the man and mystery behind Castanets, surprised us when he showed up in December as a touring member of Phosphorescent. We jumped at the opportunity to tackle to elusive double-dip of a session and one of those tracks, an unreleased one at that – “The Smallest Bones” – can now be heard as a stream a few months before it’s released as a download. It’s a part of a swell new addition to the Asthmatic Kitty site called AKRadio, which will bring unreleased and hard-to-get tracks by the entire AK galaxy. Another Daytrotter session song from My Brightest Diamond – “Magic Rabbit” – is also up there along with songs from all of the artists on the label set to play at SXSW in Austin from March 14-18th.
Daytrotter will be driving down to Austin as well, loading up a rental van with our recording equipment and accepting the generosity of our dear friends Sound Team to record sessions in Big Orange Studio, the analog home of the band and a place that Spoon, …Trail of the Dead, Voxtrot, Peter and the Wolf and many others have recorded. We have a great lineup of confirmed sessions with: Voxtrot, Tacks, The Boy Disaster, Sparrowhouse, Richard Swift, The Mountain Goats, The Little Ones, Peter and the Wolf, Alela Diane, Benjy Ferree, Bishop Allen, Land of Talk, Sea Wolf, Ladybug Transistor, O’Death, Malajube, The Presidents of the United States of America, The Young Knives and others, as well as tentative commitments from Willy Mason and Sondre Lerche.
We’re going to break away from our duties in the studio to mingle with the Texans and tourists like ourselves to attend the show that we’ll be sponsoring along with Houston radio station KTRU. You should do the same if you’ll be down there.
