tell your friends...
Some bands have no heart and some bands have a lot of it. Some even make a pile of tiny velvet cutouts of the hard-working organ an integral part of their album’s artwork. They’ll go on to hang one of those magnified hearts on a gigantic sheet that drapes and billows behind them as they perform for the kids. This is how Tegan & Sara roll. Kind of like a variation of the adage about a pitcher full of wildness not being able to hit the broad side of a barn, with that much stinking heart to play around with, there’s just more of it to get trampled on. They don’t even have sleeves, they just wear a coat of these very same hearts over their arms like windbreakers because they hate cliches. These soon-to-be 26 year olds from Calgary, Alberta indulge in emotional strife for the good of science, if science were a rotten-hearted brute who caused pessimism and low self-esteem to get the best of someone. It does, however, take a cavalier-like person to take those sour apples and turn them into empowering silver linings and icing—making apple sauce or lemonade. Tegan Quin is one of those adorable identical twin siblings, who were personally signed by Neil Young to his own Vapor Records, and who finds ways to put all of her relationship problems under a microscope and then come up with a line such as, “Look me in the eyes and tell me you don’t find me attractive/Look me in the heart and tell me you won’t go,” that express the simplistic need for affection better than anything I’ve ever heard. Tegan is the Quin with the bulb piercing for a soul patch and can be seen in the just-released concert DVD “It’s Not Fun. Don’t Do It,” a line referencing the girls climbing some rocks at Joshua Tree while touring most of 2005. Brendan Flowers makes one brief cameo, rehearsing “Indie Rock And Roll” before their first show on The Killers tour, but my only beef is that we never see any antics. This is tour and the wackiest thing that happens is they fake their friend into thinking she has a bug on her. There is no bug, but they had her going. Not quite mayhem, but…In this installment of Lasso’d, Tegan lets us in on a secret obsession over Dog the Bounty Hunter and his wife Beth.—Sean Moeller
Concert—Peaches and Eagles of Death Metal.
Hysterically Entertaining.
Book—The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory.
I can’t stop thinking how awful it was for women in the 1500’s. Not that it got any better in the 1600’s or anything, but this book made me terrified to be a Queen or the daughter of a King. So I now have a renewed sympathy for the Royal Family in England. Um, no just kidding.
CD—You Say Party! We Say Die!...Hit the Floor!
I think these guys are from Vancouver. I’ve never seen them live but the record is great. Really entertaining.
Movie—Little Miss Sunshine
I cheered and laughed out loud. Two things I don’t often do at movies. It was really great.
TV Show—Dog the Bounty Hunter
Honestly, if you can’t at least like this show you have no heart. It’s so funny and so interesting. It’s the best reality TV show, by far. I love them so much, I daydream from time-to-time about going to visit them in Hawaii. Serious.
