Saturday was by far the meatiest day of the festival, so I was careful to conserve enough energy to go nuts for Portland’s own, The Thermals. The city was buzzing all day about the homecoming show and so was I. Getting there early to get a good spot, I could not help but notice the pure anxiousness and impatience most of the concert goers wore so openly on their faces. This was a good sign. As they took the stage, they were presented with a hero’s welcome as the sold-out crowd screamed and took their dancing positions on what was to be a great set. Playing favorites like “I Might Need You To Kill” and “Culture Icons”, The Thermals danced around among the 5 or 6 giant pine trees they had put on stage, whipping the audience in to a leaping frenzy, or according to Dave Attell, “a rowdy devil’s brigade”. By the end, I was completely out of steam, but trucked on to catch the last half of Deerhunter at the Doug Fir.
